I DJ’ed Jesse’s sister’s wedding in November of 2015 which led to my favorite detail of the day: a guest stopped me and pointed out a little girl.  Now about 2, I had held her in newborn form at in 2015 during dinner (yes, I steal babies… don’t worry, I give them back).

Today I was responsible for three different sound systems: the ceremony outdoors, on the shores of the lake; dinner and speeches were in one room; the dance in yet another room.

Fortunately, the heat held off and it didn’t even hit 80 degrees.  There was a light breeze and most of the ceremony was in the shade.

The dance got a bit hot, and people were propping open doors outside, which led to the first time I’ve ever had to announce: “Please keep the doors closed so we don’t let in bugs or bats.”  Yes, bats.  Fun fact: rabies is 100% fatal if you don’t get the shot before it reaches your brain, so there’s that.

No dollar dance, no garter tonight.  No games.

No requests in advance.  A few during the dance.  More country music than I usually play.

Josy’s mom had me stay and play a 5th hour, so this dance was long, long, long.  I was good and exhausted by the end of it.

I loved LOVED their choice of first dance song, Dean Martin’s big and fun “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head.”

I’ve been slacking about these blog posts, but not today!  Plus, its approximately 135 below zero outside, so its not like I’m going anywhere.

The weather presents some challenges, but it seems like most things went off without any real problems.  The photographer did mention that, during outside photos (wait… OUTSIDE?!), she had to ask them to not breath.  And while you wonder how that works… it was more than cold enough that each breath made the little steam clouds, and they were showing up in all the photos, covering faces.

Video slide show on a loop during the first part of the evening.

Nice that they schedule a bit of extra time: social started at 5pm, dinner isn’t until 6:30.

Speeches were really good.  Two best men (Chris’ brothers) and two on Tiffany’s side.  Both of the ladies were extraordinarily nervous, and yet, well prepared and did very well.  On the men’s side, big brothers and dad all mentioned how they were expecting baby Chris to be baby sister.  Oh well…

A traditional start to the dance, with my one change: Tiffany and Chris approved my special, custom short versions of their songs.  Each just over two minutes meant that their first dance, father-daughter, and mother-son dances totally about 7 minutes, instead of about 12 the original versions would have meant.  Everyone gets their moment, and the guests get involved that much sooner.

Chris is 90’s country, most of the guests were pretty typical, and one bridesmaid desperately wanted more new music but it just didn’t work out for me to play as much as she would have liked.

Here are tonight’s songs. An asterisk marks a request:

1st: “Me and You” by Kenny Chesney
Father/bride: “Daddy Dance with Me” by Krystal Keith
Mother/groom: “A Mother’s Song” by T. Carter
I’m Yours – Jason Mraz
Uptown Funk – Bruno Mars
Billie Jean – Michael Jackson
*Celebration – Kool and the Gange
Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) – Silento
Can’t Help Falling in Love – Elvis Presley
[I was told to play a few polkas]
In Heaven There is No Beer – Frankie Yankovic
Clarinet Polka
Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison
Pretty Woman – Roy Orbison
Wagon Wheel – Old Crow Medicine Show
Fishin’ in the Dark – Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
[Dollar Dance]
*Time of My Life – Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
Make My Dreams Come True – Hall and Oates
Footloose – Kenny Loggins
Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey

Gretchen and Rylie first dance

Gretchen+Rylie: Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Gretchen Beal and Rylie Devier

Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Friday, September 2nd, 2016
Ramada Inn, Grand Forks

I brought a camera with me tonight, so enjoy the highlights from the dance.

Gretchen and Rylie first danceThey liked the idea of games, so we did the shoe game during dinner (I don’t use shoes, though, because that’s gross), and a game to give away the garter.  We also did a send off at the end of the dance, even though Gretchen and Rylie didn’t make it very far.  I ran into them about 30 minutes later, after I finished packing up my gear.

The dance was great.  Almost every single song here was either requested in advance by Rylie and Gretchen (mostly Rylie) or guests at the dance.  Seriously.  I think I picked two of these cold.  Lots of Rylie’s requests didn’t get played, he just had so many.

I made special custom short edits of their first dance and Gretchen’s dance with her dad.  This kept each song under 3 minutes to help keep things moving.  For his dance with his mom, Rylie had me start with Celine Dion, then signaled me when it was time to surprise his mom with some Shania Twain.

Some nice dance-offs to ‘Teach Me How to Dougie.”  My only shame is I missed filming a few great moments.

The music was mostly a mix of 80s and 2000s.  Marvel as I play everything from “Urgent” by Foreigner and “Gangham Style” by Psy.  But, that’s the way it works: if you’re dancing pretty much the whole night, I’ll play just about any request you have.

Wedding DJ Playlist

1st Dance: “The Only One Who Gets Me” (custom short edit) – Charles Kelley

Rustic Oaks first dance

Hayley+Andrew: Rustic Oaks wedding DJ

Hayley Anderson and Andrew Walsh

Rustic Oaks Wedding DJ

Sunday, August 21st, 2016
Rustic Oaks, Moorhead, MN

Rustic Oaks first dance Yes, a Sunday.  That doesn’t happen too often for me.  A lot of this wedding party was in a wedding I DJ’ed in January, so its nice to see some familiar faces.  In fact, the best man, Andrew’s brother, was the groomsman who helped the best man rap his toast (go find January 9th, Megan and Bobby).

I did play the music for the ceremony, using Rustic Oaks’ sound system.  Very easy.  Best part had to be the exit song.  Thanks to the movie McGruber, Andy and Hayley walked down the aisle to Michael Bolton’s “Love is a Wonderful Thing.”

Other craziness included me Rick Rolling the dance, by Andrew’s request.  Since I knew Lil’ Jon’s “Outta Your Mind” was the favorite, I started that before dropping in Rick Astley.

No Dollar Dance, no garter tonight.

I didn’t bother to mark which songs are requests because almost every single one is, either in advance from Andrew and Hayley, or from guests that evening.

A confession: I did screw up.  I accidentally played Barry Manilow for Hayley and her dad, to start, before fixing it.  My mistake was writing down the songs backwards after Hayley emailed me their final choices.  I have no one to blame but myself.

And speaking of Barry Manilow, Andrew chose it because his mom used to always play Manilow in the car when taking him to school.  Day after day.

Eryn+Ian: Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Eryn Hoefs and Ian Leier

Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Saturday, August 6th, 2016
UND Gorecki Alumni Center, Grand Forks, ND

The first thing different about today, from the DJ’s perspective… with the ceremony taking place in the same room as the reception, I had to wait to setup.  Once the ceremony was over, guests moved out, and I setup my gear (already stashed in a back room) and the Gorecki staff flipped the room into a dining room.

We also provided a photo booth.  During the social hour it acted as a photo guest book.  No props and the photos were put into a photo album.  Once the dance started the booth opened again, this time with props and the guests keep the photos.  All the photos end up in an online gallery for easy sharing.  You can see the stop motion video of all the pictures, which really is the best way to get a glimpse of all the photos.

Next big difference was dinner, which was really breakfast.  Bacon, sausage, fruit, and blueberry and cream cheese stuffed French toast which looked AMAZING.  Instead of cake, fresh doughnuts.

Danielle and Matthew's first dance

Danielle+Matthew: Grand Forks wedding DJ

Danielle Sperling and Matthew Wright

Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Danielle and Matthew's first danceFriday, August 5th, 2016
Ramada Inn, Grand Forks, ND

3 weeks later and its time for the identical twin brother to get married.  That’s right, my last blog post was about James Wright, who, today, stood best man for his brother.  So, really, half the people here already know what to expect from me, which is nice.

The candy table included a sweet Chex mix, Mexican wedding cookies, and all sorts of good stuff.  Pretzels really are fantastic once 11pm rolls around.  I will say that.

Matthew did decide to do the garter removal after all.  He entered the ballroom to “Downtown” by Macklemore (the moped song) being carried by 4 guys, sort of like a king on his throne.  It was hilarious and I’m mad I don’t have any video of it.

Kayla+James:Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Kayla Wosick and James Wright

Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Kayla and James dancingFriday, July 15th, 2016
Red Roof Inn, Grand Forks, ND

A pretty straight forward evening tonight.  Kayla and James had a small, private ceremony at her parents’ backyard.  More people were invited to join them at the reception.  Rather than a classic dinner, it was an appetizer buffet.  Honestly, I don’t understand how there were any egg rolls left.

Had a little fun coaching the best man and maid of honor through their speeches.  James’ brother hadn’t really written his at all.  Kayla’s MOH had some bullet points, but was very nervous about public speaking.  Both ended up going fine, and the maid of honor got some really great laughs after she relaxed, about 20 seconds into her speech.

Kayla and James prepared a big song list for me, using their own choices, and requests from the guests.  Very helpful because it has those random songs I would never play otherwise.  Like Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls.”  Yes.  That was a thing.

Some video highlights of the dance, which includes James’ Uncle George playing guitar and singing.  Also a dance line.

Hilary and Brady Palmer wedding day

Hilary+Brady: Vintage Gardens wedding DJ

Hilary Skjei & Brady Palmer

Vintage Gardens Wedding DJ

Hilary and Brady Palmer wedding daySaturday, July 9th, 2016
Photographers: Cloud 9 Studios
Videographer: She Said Yes! wedding video
DJ: Robert Benda
Flowers: Montague’s Floral, Crookston
Venue: Vintage Gardens, Barnesville, MN

Wow.  What a day.

We provided three different sound systems.  Ceremony outside on the lawn.  Reception in the new building.  Dance upstairs in the old barn.

The weather held up nicely until around 10pm, then the rain and lightning came.  And lots of both.  It didn’t put a damper on things, though.

The ceremony didn’t go perfectly, but, hey, that’s why I have good help.  My man, James, was there to run sound for it.  When the pastor’s microphone decided it didn’t want to cooperate, suddenly, he took care of it.  No problem.

Dinner was simple but fantastic.  Taco bar then cookies the size of your head for dessert.

Once speeches were completed, we had guests move over to the old barn.  The bar is there and so is the dance.  A video slide show before we start and off.  We.  Go.

First dance song was Lee Brice’s “I Don’t Dance.”  Appropriate since Brady insists he doesn’t.  However, there is some video evidence below that suggests otherwise.  There is also the matter of the story of Hilary and Brady meeting at a barn dance, and, in fact, dancing the entire night.

We did do a dollar dance, to make sure all the guests who wanted to had a chance to chat up Hilary and Brady.  Bouquet toss, then a game to give away the garter.  No removal though.

Not many requests.  Hilary and Brady didn’t have any.  They did provide a ‘Do Not Play’ list with about 10 songs on there, so at least we had a starting point.

As if the taco bar for dinner wasn’t enough, late night pizza is the best kind of pizza.

With no AC and being on site for, well, pretty much the entire day.  I think I drank 10-12 bottles of water.

On to the play list, below the video (video courtesy of She Said Yes! wedding video)

Songs marked with an * are requests

1st Dance: “I Don’t Dance” by Lee Brice

Adam and Laura Svercl's first dance

Laura+Adam: Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Laura Hennes and Adam Svercl

Grand Forks Wedding DJ

Laura and Adam SverclSaturday, June 25th, 2016
Banquets on the Boardwalk, EGF, MN

Its been a couple of weeks since I DJ’ed a wedding and this was another wonderful couple.

Personalizing Your Wedding Reception

Friday morning, Adam called me.  They wanted to change the introductions.  They wrote up something personal and generally funny about each person to be introduced into the ballroom.  Really great stuff.  My personal favorite might be a reference to a story about thinking the police were chasing them because they tried to return half-eaten ice cream.

This kind of personalizing of the wedding day is exactly what I like to encourage from couples.  It doesn’t take much, but a few little touches can really add up.  Similarly, during dinner, to get Adam and Laura to kiss, guests asked a question.  So if they know Adam, they asked Laura about Adam.  Something personal, to try and stump her.  The fun here is it ends up revealing odd little stories about either the bride or groom, or how these people, the guests, know them and their past.

Choosing Music That Matches “You”

I really liked their first dance song.  Instead of something really slow, it was ‘Wagon Wheel’ (the Hootie version), so it a more fun feeling than most first dances.

Also notable was Adam’s dance with his mom.  She picked the song and kept it a secret from him, contacting me directly to work it all out.  It started slow, with a Collin Raye song from when Adam was maybe 10 or 12, then jumped to “Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons.

They provided me with a good set of song requests in advance, newer and older.  Some nice variety in the guest requests, too, like Mumford and Sons and, I swear, Wham’s “Wake Me Up (before you Go-Go)” which was awesome.

A fantastic moment came a little later in the dance.  Adam and a few of his buddies did the dance to Thriller.  You can see that in the video (starts about 45 seconds in).

The video also caught a moment where a groomsman was paying for the dollar dance with change.

Kaia and James Bychinski

Kaia+James: Rustic Oaks wedding DJ

Kaia Hoium & James Bychinski

Fargo Wedding DJ

Kaia and James BychinskiSaturday, May 28th, 2016
Rustic Oaks, Moorhead, Minnesota

I’m seriously annoying I didn’t bring a camera to film dance highlights.  These guys were awesome!  Guests from all over the country in the barn, including the owners of Rustic Oaks as guests.

Personalizing Your Wedding Reception

We did trivia questions about Kaia & James, prepared by Kaia and James: get it right and they’ll kiss.  My favorite was: “When James asked Kaia to marry him, what did she say?  ‘Of course I will, you idiot.'”  (it should sound sweet in your head, when you read it).  Also included were some impossibly difficult, unrelated to Kaia & James questions (like: who was our 21st President?) for a certain table of rabble rousers (Hi, Will!).

The Dance

As the always great Rustic staff cleared tables off the dance floor, I could already see guests moving and (sort of) dancing to the background music (might have been “Africa” by Toto and other fun, slightly goofy songs), so after the special songs for the parents, we went straight to the fun stuff.

No dollar dance, no bouquet, no garter, tonight.  We did a send off for Kaia and James at the end, very simple, but otherwise it was all about the music.

As always, a blend of newer and older music.  Playing “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC got Kaia, already on the dance floor, to turn towards me and say ‘YES!  I love you!” which isn’t the response one usually expects from playing 90s music.

Wedding DJ Playlist

Trying something new, here is the actual song play list from the dance.  An asterisk (*) means it was a request, either in advance, or by a guest during.  I think I only didn’t play one request the entire night.  One oddity: literally only one country song.  That’s unusual.
